About Rouxné
"As a conveyancing coordinator in our office, I act as the central link between property practitioners, bond originators, and conveyancers. My role involves thoroughly checking offers to purchase, ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete, and then sending instructions to the relevant parties. I also closely monitor each transaction and follow up regularly to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process.
I have been with Century 21 for nearly three years, and over time, I have developed a genuine passion for the industry, particularly the legal aspects involved in property transactions."
On enrolling at the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law
"As the person responsible for ensuring smooth transactions within our agency, it is essential for me to have a clear understanding of what happens beyond our office, particularly during the registration process.
As an LLB student, I also wanted practical exposure to conveyancing to help guide my decision on which area of law I would like to pursue once I complete my studies.
In addition, my employer set a goal for 2026 to positively change the public’s perception of real estate agencies. We started by improving how we support our agents, with the understanding that this would ultimately enhance how they serve their clients. He decided to focus on education first. By improving my knowledge, I could better serve our agents and clients.
When I was given the opportunity to complete the conveyancing secretary course, I was incredibly excited. I am passionate about learning and enjoy being in a position where colleagues and clients can rely on me for guidance and answers!"
"I was extremely impressed with the lecturer, Melissa. She clearly has a strong passion for conveyancing and an in-depth understanding of the subject. She created an environment where no question felt insignificant, and she always ensured that students understood the material rather than simply pointing out mistakes."
"I was particularly impressed by how efficiently she worked through the study material while still providing practical insights and ensuring that everyone kept up with the content."
On facing challenges
"I faced more challenges than I ever anticipated. I had to balance taking care of my baby (who was sick the majority of the time) and attending the Zoom sessions. On many occasions, I had him on my lap whilst attending these sessions, making notes and comforting him all at once! At the same time, I had to ensure that my work responsibilities remained on track while keeping up with my studies and assignments.
I think doubt was my biggest challenge. I would sometimes think: 'I can’t do this,' or be convinced that I am going to fail the evaluations. I even had times where I thought: 'This is tough, is this really what I should be doing?' "
"Despite all of the doubt, I consistently scored above 80% on my evaluations, which gave me a sense of confidence again."
Rouxné's practical tips for paralegals
- "Preparation is key. As soon as you receive your study material, start working through it instead of waiting for the sessions. This helps you stay on track and fully understand the content as it is presented.
- It is also important to remain focused during sessions. There are many valuable practical tips shared that can easily be missed if you are not fully present. I learned this the hard way after losing notes that would have made my first evaluation significantly easier.
- Finally, try not to stress. While there is a lot of information to absorb, the course itself is not as difficult as it may seem. Staying calm and consistent makes the learning process much more manageable."
On role models
"The person I look up to most is my fiancé. He has an incredible ability to thrive under pressure and remain grounded, no matter what life throws at him. Even in difficult situations, he actively works on maintaining a positive mindset, which is something I deeply admire and try to emulate in both my personal life and my career. He is my absolute rock — always supportive, encouraging, and reminding me to pause, breathe, and approach challenges with clarity rather than fear. His belief in me has played a significant role in my growth and confidence.
At the same time, my son is one of my greatest sources of motivation. He inspires me every day to work harder, to keep learning, and to build a future where I can give him opportunities I didn’t have growing up. Everything I do, especially pursuing my studies and advancing in my career, is driven by the desire to create a better life for him."
Key takeaways
- "The course provides real practical value. After each level, I encountered transactions and situations in my work that I had not dealt with before, and I was able to apply what I had learned with a new level of understanding.
- Conveyancing is not nearly as intimidating as it seems. I initially viewed it as a very complex area of law, but once you understand the fundamentals and work through the material step by step, it becomes much more manageable.
- The course reinforced my belief that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. In the beginning, I was concerned about balancing my responsibilities and whether I would succeed. Completing this course proved to me that being dedicated and having confidence in my abilities can move mountains."
