This Wills Month, we're taking a deep dive into a valuable checklist: the life file.
A life file checklist is a comprehensive list of crucial documents and information needed to manage your affairs after your death or if you are unable to manage your affairs due to medical reasons, for example. This checklist helps your spouse and family members to find essential information, like financial details, legal documents, and end-of-life wishes, making the process easier during a difficult time.
You may have heard of the more informal "green box exercise", where you simply collect all the info your loved ones will need if you should pass away.
What does a life file checklist include?
1. Legal documents
- Will: A valid will outlining how your assets will be distributed.
- Power of Attorney: Documents granting someone the authority to manage your affairs if you become incapacitated.
- Living will (also called an advance healthcare directive): Specifies your wishes regarding your medical treatment if you are unable to make decisions.
- Marriage certificate, ante-nuptial contract (ANC), death certificates of your spouse/children (if applicable): Documents related to family and marital status.
