If you're looking to study law in South Africa but are worried about the financial implications, we have good news. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) will help turn your dreams into reality. We will walk you through everything you need to know about NSFAS and how you can leverage it to pursue a law degree.
What is NSFAS?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African Government initiative designed to provide financial support to deserving students who wish to study at public universities or TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) colleges. Established to bridge the financial gap for many underprivileged students, NSFAS has played an instrumental role in helping many South Africans acquire higher education. Note that the NSFAS offers funding for all the required time of learning for the programme.
How NSFAS can support your law studies
Studying law can be quite expensive, with costs encompassing tuition, books, accommodation, and other expenses. NSFAS provides funding to eligible students to cover these costs. This ensures that students, regardless of their economic background, have a shot at becoming the nation's future lawyers, judges, and legal experts.
Benefits of using NSFAS to study law
Access to quality education
Studying law often requires access to comprehensive resources, experienced faculty, and cutting-edge facilities. With the NSFAS, you gain access to institutions and programmes that can provide a robust legal education without being burdened by financial constraints.
Reduced financial stress
Pursuing a law degree can be financially demanding, but with NSFAS, you won't have to worry about exorbitant tuition fees and other associated costs. This allows you to focus on your studies and excel academically.
Career opportunities
A law degree opens doors to a plethora of career paths, from practising law as an attorney or advocate, to venturing into corporate law, human rights, or even academia. NSFAS provides the foundation you need to launch a successful legal career.
Networking opportunities
Law school is not just about studying textbooks; it's about networking with peers, professors, and professionals in the field. NSFAS enables you to immerse yourself fully in the academic environment and engage in meaningful interactions that can shape your future.
Eligibility criteria for NSFAS
While NSFAS offers remarkable opportunities, it's important to understand the eligibility criteria. To qualify for NSFAS funding, you need to meet the following criteria:
Financial need
NSFAS primarily focuses on providing financial aid to students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. To determine your financial need, NSFAS looks at the annual combined gross household income. The income threshold for eligibility varies based on certain factors:
For general applicants: The combined gross household income should be R350,000 or less per annum.
For students with disabilities: The combined gross household income should be R600,000 or less per annum.
This requirement ensures that the assistance is directed towards those who truly require financial support to pursue their studies.
Academic requirement
In order to be eligible for NSFAS funding, you need to be applying for an undergraduate qualification at a public university or a TVET college in South Africa. This means that you must have completed your high school education and must have been accepted into a recognised and accredited institution for further studies.
Citizenship
Only South African citizens are eligible to apply for NSFAS funding. This criterion is in place to ensure that the financial aid is targeted towards supporting the educational aspirations of citizens of South Africa.

Accuracy matters: Double-check all the information you provide on the application form. Any discrepancies could delay the processing of your application.
Seek guidance: If you're uncertain about any part of the application process, seek guidance from your school's financial aid office or the NSFAS helpline (021 763 3200).
A few points to remember
Repayment: It's important to note that NSFAS funding is not a traditional loan with interest. Repayment is based on the principle of "paying it forward." Once you start working and earning a certain income threshold, you will begin repaying a portion of the funding you received. The repayment amount is calculated based on your income, and if your income falls below a specific threshold, you may not be required to make repayments.
Top achievers: Matriculants who are top academic achievers and are financially needy get automatically funded by NSFAS, so make sure to work hard and achieve high grades!
Studying law: When choosing to study law, ensure that the institution and the law programme are accredited. Only then will you be eligible for NSFAS funding for the course.
Now that you are equipped with information about NSFAS, don't let financial constraints hold you back – let NSFAS pave the way for your journey to legal excellence.
