About Tara

"I am a Personal Assistant to one of our directors, who is a conveyancer and notary.  I have been with the firm for well over a year and primarily assist with conveyancing matters, particularly property transfers.  My role includes providing administrative and professional support and assisting with the day-to-day management and progression of transfer matters.

I matriculated in 2018, after which I pursued an LLB degree.  I completed three years of my studies, but did not complete the degree.  Thereafter, I entered the workforce and gained experience in administration, personal assistance, and social media management.  In 2025, I decided to pursue a more stable, office-based career, which led me to my current position at the law firm."

On enrolling at the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law

"As I primarily assist with property transfers, the directors felt that this paralegal training would be highly beneficial in broadening my knowledge and strengthening my understanding of the conveyancing process and the applicable law.  They gave me the opportunity to attend the Conveyancing for secretaries course, which I gladly accepted, as I believed it could help me improve my knowledge and help me become more confident and effective in my role.

Melissa was exceptional.  Her passion for conveyancing is clear and she has a wonderful way of explaining the work in a way that is easy to understand.  She makes the lectures both practical and enjoyable, and she never rushes through a section if someone is struggling to understand it."

"She is patient and always willing to explain things further.  I absolutely loved having her as our lecturer and feel that she is perfectly suited for this role."

On facing challenges

"I faced some challenges during the course.  During the evaluation period, I was extremely sick due to hyperemesis gravidarum while pregnant and was vomiting constantly.

At the same time, I had to balance the course with my work responsibilities.  Despite this, I pushed through and completed the evaluations, because I knew how valuable this opportunity was for me.  I stayed committed and did my best to manage both my work and the course."

Tara's practical tips for paralegals

  • "One of the most important tips I would give is to stay focused during the lectures.  There are many valuable little nuggets of information shared throughout the course that you could easily miss if you are not paying attention.  Attend the lectures (on time), take notes and listen carefully when others ask questions, as they may raise important points that you can also learn from.
  • My second tip is to never be afraid to ask questions.  If there is something you do not understand, ask.  The course is a great opportunity to learn, and asking questions can help you gain a much better understanding of the practical side of conveyancing."

Key takeaways

  • "The course gave me a much better understanding of the different steps involved in a property transfer and how each step fits into the overall process.
  • I learned how important it is to pay attention to the small details in conveyancing, as even a minor mistake can have a significant impact on the transfer process.
  • One of my biggest takeaways was being able to apply the knowledge I gained directly to the transfer matters I was working on.  This helped me connect the theory to my day-to-day work and gave me greater confidence in my role."
