"The structure of the modules allowed for more engagement as the content was spread out well, which I feel is necessary for students to grasp what is being presented.

One of my favourite aspects of the course was the in-person classes, which created an environment that kept me grounded and keen to learn, as it opened up a platform to socialise with other students who are at different stages of their lives and careers.  This quelled those doubts and fears of where I am and where I want to be, as it reminded me that my aspirations are not unreasonable and that I should continue to strive to make my vision a reality."

On facing challenges

"Like many people balancing life and professional development, I encountered both personal and professional challenges. 

Time management was a major hurdle, especially when trying to meet work expectations while still learning.  Personally, whenever there was a moment to spare, I joined my lectures in real time or caught up on a recording.  I tried to balance weekends and celebrations to give my all in the modules, but also take time to be a part of life and its beautiful moments. 

What helped was staying grounded, being honest with my seniors about where I needed support, or requesting time off to be a part of the invaluable in-person lectures.  I had a team that supported me, guided me, and celebrated with me, which is vital when it comes to learning, advancing, and growing.  It reminded me that growth isn’t always linear; every setback taught me something valuable.  It is important to remind oneself that professional or life’s challenges are not always meant to be faced alone; someone can and will relate to what you are going through.  Speak up, ask for help, and learn to rise again when faced with failure; it is a stepping stone to your success."

Hirakanie's tips for PVT students

• "My biggest tip is to attend your lectures in real-time as far as possible; it makes all the difference to engage with your lecturers and ask those questions for clarity because there is a chance that your peers may guide you or face the same challenges as you do.
• There are times when it will feel impossible to get through your tasks, work, and your personal life, but remember to breathe, take it one day at a time, and set small goals for yourself. 
• Engage with your peers and lecturers; they are there to help.
• If you struggle with time management when it comes to your quizzes, do not be afraid to flag your question and move on to the next one.  I found it more manageable to do what I knew first and then give more time to those challenging questions thereafter.
• Finally, treat your practical vocational training programme like a real job and bring your best energy to it, because the habits you build here will carry over into your career."

On role models

"I look up to my mother because of her integrity, resilience, and commitment to positivity when faced with challenges.  She always finds a way to resolve things with grace and patience.  

My mother has taught me that it’s possible to have a strong moral compass and still succeed in a highly demanding profession.  To use my voice boldly and confidently to reach out to others, to assist them, and to make a difference.  Her compassion and empathy while fiercely advocating for what is fair and just is something I aspire to emulate in my own practice.  It is her faith that has inspired me to rely on God’s grace and strength to be confident in my desire to help others and seek justice.  ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’  For I have seen what the Lord has done for me, and I believe that the Lord’s plans are greater and that this is just the beginning of a wonderful, purpose-driven legal career."

What's next?

"I’m drawn to both family and criminal law because they deal with people at pivotal, often vulnerable, moments in their lives.  These areas of law require not only legal skill but empathy, patience, and a deep sense of justice.  I believe in giving people a voice and ensuring they understand their rights, especially when the outcomes can profoundly impact their future and relationships.  It’s meaningful work, and it constantly challenges me to grow as both a legal professional and a human being.  It’s not about just helping one person, but rather amending laws to include those who remain unprotected and advocating for change and advancement."
