About Jacobie
"I’m currently a Candidate Attorney at Barnard Incorporated Attorneys. I grew up and matriculated in Stellenbosch, and began my tertiary studies with a BCom Law degree at Stellenbosch University in 2018.
I then completed my postgraduate LLB between 2021 and 2022, concluding the final six months of the degree on an academic exchange at KU Leuven in Belgium."
On enrolling at the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law
"I chose the GLR PVT School because of the many success stories I heard from others who had completed the programme.
The online format was a major advantage, allowing me to balance work and studies more effectively. The structure of the programme, along with the support from the coordinators, made the entire process seamless and well-organised."
Utilising law school to prepare for the competency-based exams
"The Gawie le Roux PVT School played a significant role in helping me prepare for and pass the competency-based exams. It helped me establish a consistent routine of studying and working long hours, which was essential for staying disciplined and focused. The programme also exposed me to areas of law that I hadn’t encountered in my current work environment, broadening my understanding and perspective."
"Importantly, it reinforced theoretical knowledge from my university studies and helped me bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application in the workplace."
400-hour vs 150-hour PVT programme of structured course work
"I opted for the 400-hour PVT programme because I have a registered practical vocational training (PVT) contract, and one of the key benefits of the extended programme is the opportunity to reduce the compulsory two-year training period to just one year."
On facing challenges
"Balancing work, personal life, and studying for the CBE was definitely challenging. It required a lot of discipline and taught me the importance of prioritising my time effectively. I quickly learned that planning, and then planning some more, was essential to staying on track. By creating a structured routine and sticking to it, I was able to manage the demands of each area without compromising on quality."
Jacobie's tips for PVT students
"My biggest tip is to remember that you’re capable of more than you think."
"The 400-hour PVT programme is demanding in terms of commitment, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Planning and time management are key; the more structure you create, the more manageable everything becomes."
“Growth happens outside your comfort zone”
"That’s something my dad always told me. It’s the mindset that led me to spend the final six months of my degree abroad participating in an academic exchange programme at KU Leuven in Belgium.
Stepping into the unknown came with its challenges, but it stretched me in ways I never imagined. The incalculable exposure an opportunity like this creates is something that develops one’s way of thinking, living, and the impact one can have on other people.
This exposure has equipped me with the ability to work with different people, but more importantly, the eagerness to learn from people from all cultures and all walks of life. It was an unforgettable experience that shaped both my personal and professional growth, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything."
