About Ulandi
"I began my career in the mining industry at a very junior level as a typist after completing my matric at the age of 16 in 1977. Like many at that stage of life, I explored different paths, including a brief period considering teaching, before entering the mining sector through administrative work.
What started as a modest entry point became the foundation of a career spanning more than four decades. Through dedication and continuous growth, I progressed into a range of roles, including executive support as personal assistant to the chairman, project management in corporate social investment, administrative officer, financial controller, and currently Assistant Company Secretary and Manager of the Chairman’s Office at Sedibelo Resources.
Alongside my professional journey, I pursued further education, completing a Diploma in Project Management (cum laude) from Unisa, a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, and an LLB (including Honours) from Stellenbosch University. I was working towards an LLM in International Trade Law last year, which I had to place on hold due to my medical journey, and I intend to resume when circumstances allow.
My decision to formalise my legal studies was driven by a childhood aspiration, combined with my later exposure to corporate governance, legal processes, and complex operational environments within the mining industry. I wanted to deepen my understanding and contribute more meaningfully within a legal and regulatory framework."

"One of the most important principles that has guided my work, both professionally and academically, is the concept of Completed Staff Work (CSW). With origins in military practice and later taught in institutions such as Harvard, this principle was instilled in me by a chairman of a large mining company, Mr Brian Gilbertson, whom I had the privilege of working with.
It emphasises producing work that is complete, accurate, and ready for decision-making; work that requires no further refinement beyond sign-off. This mindset has shaped my approach to legal drafting and professional responsibility.
For those considering the 400-hour programme, my advice is simple: approach every task with that same level of completeness and accountability. Treat your work as if it will be presented at the highest level."

"Balancing full-time professional responsibilities with academic and practical training presented its challenges. During this period, I was also navigating a serious personal health journey, which remains ongoing and continues to require resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose.
While demanding, this experience reinforces the importance of discipline, perspective, and perseverance. By maintaining structured routines and focusing on long-term goals, I am able to continue progressing despite these challenges.

What's next?
"Looking ahead, I am focused on preparing for the competency-based exams scheduled for 5 and 6 August, an important milestone in my journey. Thereafter, I intend to complete my practical training requirements and proceed toward admission as an attorney.
This journey reflects a long-term commitment to growth, adaptability, and continuous learning and demonstrates that it is never too late to evolve professionally and pursue new goals with purpose and determination."
