Zanele Leon passed her final board exam paper during the second sitting this year.

About Zanele

"I am currently a legal and administrative assistant at PHG Group (Pty) Ltd."

Background

"I hold an LLB from the University of Johannesburg.  I have also passed the South African Rugby Union (SARU) Accreditation for rugby agents."

Tackling the competency-based exam

"Paper 3 is known to be a monster.  In this attempt, I was lucky enough to have my mother pay for GLR's Attorneys' admission exam course.  I found that the videos were particularly helpful as Johan van Stade explained the various topics using practical examples.  Although the syllabus changed so close to the exam, the Gawie le Roux Institute of Law provided as much information as possible.  I supplemented my course notes with other notes and the support of other candidates on various WhatsApp groups."

Zanele's study tips for Paper 3

"Finding a study technique that works best for you is important, especially with the vast content candidates are expected to know.

  1. Read the notes first, then read the notes with a pencil to mark what you view as important information and what you still need to understand better.
  2. From there, make notes and flash cards based on how you learn.
  3. Make use of technology in creating flashcards or explaining terms for easier understanding.
  4. If you are unsure of what study technique to use, I would suggest doing a quiz to find out the type of learner you are and that will allow you to explore what works best for you."

Zanele's tips on how to secure articles

"I personally struggled to find articles, the only way to ensure you secure articles is to never give up.  Connect with attorneys on LinkedIn and other social media platforms and do not be afraid to reach out and ask for help in connecting you with a firm that is currently hiring."

Top 3 takeaways as a candidate attorney

"I have learned that I am resilient, determined and have an unimpeachable integrity."

For the love of the game and gender equality

"While I was in high school, it came to light that the school was spending less money on girls' sports.  Being raised in a family where fairness and justice are of paramount importance I challenged this.  With the help of my mother, we successfully challenged the status quo of the school and set a precedent.  This led to my love for gender equality, not only in sport law but within society as a whole.  Working towards my admission, I took this love and wrote the SARU accreditation examination and passed."

"I am currently the only woman of colour in the country to have passed this exam.  Now that I am this much closer to admission, I believe that these skills and my love for gender equality will lead me into great ventures as an attorney."
